Stormwater Management
What is Stormwater Runoff?

Stormwater runoff occurs when precipitation from rain flows over the ground. Impervious surfaces like driveways, sidewalks, and streets prevent stormwater from naturally soaking into the ground.
Stormwater can pick up debris, chemicals, dirt, and other pollutants and flow into a storm sewer system or directly to a lake, stream, river, wetland, or coastal water. Anything that enters a storm sewer system is discharged untreated into the waterbodies we use for swimming, fishing, and other recreational activities.

Is a Storm Drain System the Same as a Sanitary Sewer System?

The short answer is NO. The water that goes down a sink or toilet flows through a sewer system to a wastewater treatment plant where it is treated and cleaned before it is discharged to a waterbody. Water that flows down a driveway or street and into a gutter ends up in a natural body of water and is NOT treated.

Bloomingdale’s Stormwater Management Plan and Annual Report

The City has developed a Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP) as required by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division (EPD). This Plan provides a comprehensive framework for inspecting and maintaining City stormwater infrastructure and how the City will address water quality issues, enforce stormwater requirements, and educate and involve the public about important stormwater best management practices (BMPs).
Bloomingdale's updated Stormwater Management Plan (SWMP) was recently revised and approved by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Environmental Protection Division. Each year, the City also submits an Annual Report to the Georgia EPD that summarizes stormwater activities conducted during the reporting period. The City’s most recent Annual Report that was submitted to the Georgia EPD may be viewed here.

Questions? Comments? Have a Stormwater Issue to Report?

One of the Best Management Practices (BMPs) listed in Bloomingdale’s SWMP is to post this Plan and most recent Annual Report on the City’s Stormwater website. Residents are invited to provide input on these documents by asking questions and providing suggestions to improve the program. Residents are also encouraged to report any stormwater issues they observe, such as illegal dumping of trash or chemicals into storm drains.
